There is something that really struck me about the Ace Hotel photos from Dwell.com. Palm Springs is mostly known for its mod 1960s design and culture, but this here is totally different. At first viewing, I immediately thought I was looking at a post about a place in Austin, TX or New Mexico. Every one of these images looks like home to me...or the home I see for myself in the future. If there was ever anything that depicted my style to a T, the Ace Hotel is it. With other locations in New York, Portland and Seattle, this hotel is not your frequent Marriot with spots all over the country that bore you with cookie-cutter and identical decor. However, after researching, I've come to find that Palm Springs probably has the better personality of the four.

"Brick by Brick"- the bit on Hernandez and Surratt's home in Chicago, was in the first issue I ever received of Dwell. Its the A-typical, modern architecture building tightly positioned between two ordinary houses (with their own charm, of course). This is usually the formula for something like this... Anyhow, the bright oranges of rugs, cars, curtains and wardrobe mesh very well with the minimalist style and very vintage/retro characteristics that are scattered here and there. She & Him | Vol. 2. i love the riffs and background vocals in many of the tracks. very 1960s.... Dusty Springfield, Shangri-las, The Shirelles, Brenda Lee-esque; and a total mimicry of Ani Difranco's, Wishin' & Hopin' (which i love!). almost going to pre-order this. yes, thats how much i want it.

okay, so basically there aren't words in the english language that are fitting enough to explain my love for music. but sparklehorse's- sea of teeth has been on constant repeat this afternoon. these are my favorite types of songs....good lyrics, good instrumentals, TRUE vocals. no long notes, or adding vowels to the end of every word. soothing would be a good word. but still, i have none. no words. ugh! i remember sparklehorse from years and years ago... and i am glad peonyinlove.tumblr posted a video that included sea of teeth....it thoroughly reinforced my intrigue of this music. listening to mark linkous reminds me of when i went through a reflective period in my life and listened to mainly bands like the sundays, azure ray, neko case, death cab, mazzy star, fiona apple & the counting crows (colorblind). i realize that art, music, film, literature (etc) can so easily hold me captive with bouts of transcendence and contentment. discovering that someone can compose something so relative to my state of being that makes me feel at home, comfortable and okay with how i feel is completely invigorating. i wish i could marry this feeling.

i'm sitting at this huge conference table without the boring conference or conference people that wear clean pinstriped suits; but, i can picture them all around me. the typical plastic coffee pot in the center, as hands grab from all directions for the overrated starbucks coffee that comes in bulk every two weeks. they say today's meeting is very important, they will be discussing budget and replacements for fed-up retirees. everyone thinks they're somethin' special. in reality, there's just me....with my paperwork strewn across a tacky piece of furniture from the 1980s. i'm pulling a file apart for a subpoena that an uptight city-worker needs in a week. i pull rusty staples off of fifteen year old reams of paper that frequently break instead of come loose and as a result jump at me and sting my cheek & forehead. i've got my headphones on, pretending to look busy and interested while people outside of the room talk about office bull shit that i could care less about. hence the headphones. i'm listening to belle & sebastian. i start thinking that at any moment i could begin to cry because i realize that i'm that typical loser-girl that i watch in every other indie movie. the one that listens to the smiths, likes foreign films and wears mismatch clothes. i complain about my shitty job and my crappy 1994 ford escort lx. no, i'm not kidding and yes, i could almost cry. just how that girl on the screen at the sundance film festival would start to cry as a song by jeff buckley chimes in. i picture myself losing control but i don't. i just continue on, feeling even more pathetic that i'm obviously not brave enough to cry or scream or walk out and tell the boss-lady that i fuckin quit!

i'm the epitome of angry-girl rock bands from seattle. i'm sad and melancholy like jennifer aniston in the good girl. sitting behind a makeup counter at a discount store, eating half a sandwich for lunch. answering phones at the front desk at a doctor's office, where i have beef with doc's wifey who knows of our little love affair, except the only beef i truly have is with myself. maybe because i'm aware and observant enough to know that its time for a goddamn change. and maybe because i sit in a cubicle four days a week and paint pretty pictures in my head of places i want to go.

i leave the conference table and sit back at that cubicle that oozes boredom. i'm painting a picture of monaco; i'm halfway done. but, the phone rings and it's another pharmacy and i want to yell at maria or marcella, or whatever the fuck her name is for interrupting me. because, of course, i was busy. but instead, the daily rhetoric comes out and i say..."this is aileen, how may i help you?" and whatever the fuck her name is tells me, "blah, blah, blah, please?" and then its my turn again-please hold. i will transfer your call. i will open the mail, stamp it, hand it to my supervisor. i will waste time in the bathroom for 5 minutes. stare in the mirror, put my ipod on shuffle. go back to my desk and say, "wow, i can't believe its already that time."

cut to 5:00 pm.

i've been meaning to post these charlotte ronson campaigns. i've been really consumed with school. i'm taking two Photography classes, which happens 3 times a week for 4 hrs or more every night. i'm trying to adjust to it all since our wet lab and studios were moved from the communications department and fittingly to the art building. i've been getting smart and am making sure to write down everything- notes, ideas, inspirations. there is a lot of talent in my advanced class- naturally, i feel inferior. however, i feel blessed as in a couple of more sessions i'll feel comfortable enough to pick everyone's brains. so far, i have the ideas to do a series of film noir photos and am currently working on a self-portrait. i'm saving for a trip to Brooklyn, but intrigued to save for a new camera and lens, as well. i'd really love to take more photos of people.

school is keeping me busy and i've been less attracted to the computer lately. i have a lot on my mind and a lot of things i've been wanting to change in my life. i've realized that maybe blogging is completely self-centered, or even more- an egocentric act that i continuously partake in. i realize that maybe i've created this whole sphere of unrealistic activity by participating in things like blogger or facebook. maybe one day when i think of a better angle for a blog, i would feel more fulfilled. should i even feel fulfilled from accomplishing something like this? i don't know. REALITY > cyber world. its embarrassing to know that all of my creativity is being used on something that isn't even tangible. i do all of this with the notion that maybe someday i'll gather a reader or two. it begins to feel useless to me.

Celebrating Valentine's Day in the form of the classic movie musical. Two of my favorite songs from two of the cutest young actresses of golden eras- Judy Garland and Debbie Reynolds. If you haven't seen these film scenes, I suggest you do. They're sweet and unforgettable and something that is hard to see in the movies today. I will always be an old soul and vintage, retro & antique valentines day things have always seemed more sweet and romantic than what we have and do today.

this post is a homage to WWW's "Currently Channeling". follow the link and you're bound to find inspiration galore. this kind of styling is my favorite thing to look up and find in fashion magazines. i love looking for connections and references- especially in fashion & style. i'm constantly thinking of all aspects of a movie, the clothes are a major part of how transcendent any film is. Pretty Woman may be a little bit risque, but to be inspired, instead of completely copy Julia Robert's character as a call girl could really, really make for a bitchin' outfit. i love the little details.... like how Vivian's studded cuff bracelets go perfect with her chain necklaces...anyway, enjoy!

vionnet i'm in love with a lot of the pre fall collections. zac posen's collection reminds me of the dresses from the 70s that my grandma kept in the back of her closet. the memories of me trying on bright orange dresses with floral attributes here and there with brown leather wedges and cute clutch bags make me feel all giddy inside. the prints from pre fall vionnet are to die for, each headwrap compliments each ensemble and i'm kind of diggin' the thigh-high look with everything. & of course, they've managed to completely reel me in with the light-pink, white and black color combo! my all-time favorite mixture of tones. i'm also very partial to the leggings from jason wu's coll. the subdued makeup with the golden highlights of the alyona's blonde hair is very accomodating. the separates are intricately placed together while the silver cocktail and black lace dresses make me oooh and ahhh with the desire to find a party to go to just to imagine myself in one of them...yes, imagine. i could never afford the clothes i love.

Steve Alan introduced his Spring 2010 collection by teaming up with Adam Levite and Ghost Robot in creating a short film. Set in the country, two lovers seem to be at peace while looking for inspiration and creativity. With a setting of vintage patterns and design, pretty tones of color and soft spoken conversations, the two resort to an evening BBQ with friends as a result of boredom or lonesomeness. It is something short, sweet and romantic.

a lot of the time all of my wonders and curiosities start to mend together and confuse themselves into some sort of inseparable force. as if all of the individually distinct things in my mind are merely petty as they combine and turn into one or two theories. theories on life, love, people, the world. just when i think i can cope, i find myself beginning to worry about or dwell on something totally offbeat, new or rehabilitated. i am always curious of my actions and thoughts. am i doing this right? will i achieve ultimate happiness; who can i benefit? who or what to love? all that is honest, true, or certain to me is that this game, this puzzle, this journey called life is undeniably brief. through my years, i've taught myself to be sentimental. because if life is as fleeting as i fancy it to be, how memorable can any moment remain without sentiment?

whatever else there is after all of these years is unbeknownst to me....and yes,there is some kind of romance in that. it's beautifully intriguing, yet drives me to tears. do you remember the piece in Paris, Je T'aime directed by Alexander Payne? the 14th arrondissement? the part where carol sits in the park and cries....at first viewing i thought she was crying because she was depressed. but, as she conitnued to cry, i began to giggle. because i figured to be her at that very moment would be ideal. and to find myself as her character did in Paris, would be my utmost goal in life.
